The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is by definition the leading national machinery for the promotion of the status of women in Cambodia. It was established to lead, coordinate and facilitate efforts for gender equality and women’s empowerment in our country. It acts as a catalyst and advocate to encourage public institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector to integrate gender equality into their policies and programmes. It is also responsible for monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of government policies and programmes aiming at achieving gender equality.

The origin of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs lies in the Secretariat of State for Women’s Affairs which was established in 1993. The Secretariat was replaced by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in January 1996 which, in turn, became the Ministry of Women’s and Veterans’ Affairs from 1999 to 2004. When the new Government was formed in July 2004, the Ministry again became the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

In February 1999, the Ministry of Women’s and Veterans’ Affairs published its first Five-Year National Strategic Plan for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (Neary Rattanak I).  Currently, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs is leading the coordination for implementing the Neary Rattanak IV, the fourth Five-Year National Strategic Plan for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (2014-2018).
